Abebech | Meet the Owner

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Emebet Nigatu has spent her life immersed in the vibrant traditions of Ethiopian cuisine. Growing up in her father’s restaurant and bar, she learned the rhythms of the culinary world from an early age. Her mother, a talented home cook, taught her the secrets of authentic Ethiopian recipes, sparking a lifelong passion for cooking and sharing the flavors of her homeland.

While Emebet pursued a rewarding career as a registered nurse (RN), her love for cooking never wavered. After years of balancing her profession with her culinary interests, she is now taking the exciting step of expanding her passion for food by opening her own café.

Emebet’s journey led her to Italy, where she spent ten years honing her skills in Italian cooking under the guidance of a 92-year-old friend and mentor. This unique blend of cultures is reflected in Abebech’s menu, which will offer authentic Ethiopian dishes alongside special Italian-inspired selections. These daily specials will include lasagna, spaghetti with Bolognese sauce, special meatballs, pasta al forno, and minestrone soup, bringing a taste of Italy to complement the traditional Ethiopian flavors.

When Emebet first walked into the Petworth location of Gueny’s Café & Market, she was transported back to Ethiopia by the familiar warmth and aromas. Inspired by this connection, she decided to take over the space, preserving much of the beloved menu while adding her personal touch to a few recipes. Emebet uses spices imported directly from Ethiopia to ensure the authenticity of every dish, and she will continue to serve some of Guenet’s cherished recipes.

At Abebech, Emebet goes beyond serving meals. Guests can also purchase Ethiopian spices, in-house roasted coffee beans, grab-and-go portions of popular stews and injera, freshly made samosas, pastries, and desserts. The café will host buffet-style Sunday brunches and offer catering services for events, from weddings to office meetings.

Emebet is passionate about creating a welcoming space where the community can enjoy not only delicious food but also a taste of Ethiopian culture, reminding diners of home—or giving them a new home away from home. Combining her professional experience with her deep culinary roots, Emebet brings both care and authenticity to every aspect of Abebech.
